Alhambra is near the city of Granada in the district of Granada which is at the south of Spain. Alhambra is a series of lovely palaces and gardens which are beautiful, well preserved and of excellent architectural beauty. More than eight thousand visitors visit the Alhambra everyday, enjoy the beauty and take photographs to take home and show the world the beauty of Spanish architecture.

UNESCO has declared Alhambra as a World Heritage Site. Alhambra means a red or crimson castle as it looks like that in the sunlight. At nights it becomes pearly white and is called ‘pearls set in emeralds’. It is so beautiful. The Alhambra is a fortress, a palace and a small city. The main palace of Charles V is at the center and is an outstanding piece of Renaissance architecture. The Alcabza is the oldest part of Alhambra and has solid towers on its four sides. You can enter through the lovely gardens which are well kept and preserved. La Casa Royal comprises of several palaces with courts. The most spectacular piece is the Chamber of the Lions. Twelve lions made of marble are the main attractions. There is a twelve sided fountain and plenty of palm tress which combine to make it a lovely and beautiful place worth visiting and a must see item on all tourists and visitors list.

Red, blue and golden colors dominate the Alhambra and all the palaces and court have this theme and color combinations. The terrace of Alhambra covers a lot of area and is beautifully crafted. Natural elements are combined with man made ones to make the architecture stunningly attractive. It speaks volumes for the skills of the craftsmen of those times. The entire place is like heaven on earth which is the basic theme of the place. Every one who worked and planned the Alhambra, whether Muslim or Christian kept this theme in mind which has resulted in such a perfect place. Fountains with running water make a sweet sound and strong columns, reflecting pools and others have been used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the place.

Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, was given permission by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabelle in the Hall of the Ambassadors which is the largest in the Alhambra. It is a square room which was used as a reception room with the King’s throne placed opposite the entrance. The main attraction is the Vase of Alhambra. It is 1.3 meters in height and is blue, white and gold in color. It dates back to 1320 and is a beautiful sample of Moorish art.

Alhambra has elaborate bedrooms, bathrooms summer rooms, whispering galleries, labyrinths and a host of other such things which has made it a great tourist attraction, never to be forgotten. A visit to Spain is incomplete without a visit to Alhambra. This fortress city has so many things to be seen that several visits are necessary to complete seeing the Alhambra in its entirety. It reflects Spain’s melting pot culture where so many rulers ruled it.

Barcelona is an important city of Spain which attracts thousands of tourists every year. Besides the historic monuments, cathedrals and mosques, Barcelona also has plenty of green parks, a lovely coastline dotted with beaches, music and dance and of course, mouthwatering food.

Barcelona is an important economic center and has the second largest airport of Spain which is a hub of activity teeming with thousands of people everyday. Barcelona also has an excellent and busy harbor. There are several world heritage sites in Barcelona which are the main attractions for tourists. The monuments have interesting history, architecture and beauty which are unique and lovely.

Barcelona was founded as a Roman city and it has two stories of its origin. One is that it was founded by Hercules four hundred years before Rome was built. Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal is said to have rebuilt it. The second story says that it was Hamilcar Barca who founded it. Whoever built Barcelona did it with love and care. Actually Barcelona, like all other Spanish cities, is a cauldron of many cultures and many people and religions which co exist peacefully. It was besieged by several people and hence has an interesting culture and history.

People from round the world come to see the Roman ruins in Barcelona. It was the Romans who transformed the small town into a military camp in 15 BC and they had their center on a small hill called Mons Taber where Barcelona now stands. The Counts of Barcelona expanded their territory to include all of Catalonia and in the 13th century even Naples, Athens and Sicily came under their territory. They used to mint their own coins and some still exist as collector’s items.

The climate of Barcelona is Mediterranean and hence it has warm summers and mild winters. There is hardly any snowfall and the coldest months are January and February.
Barcelona beaches are long and beautiful. Tourists come here to enjoy the sea and the beaches and also to attend the various cultural programs which go on continuously in Barcelona. The world famous Gran Teatre del Liceu Open Theatre, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the Yeatre Lliure and palau de la Music Catalona concert hall are some of the well known places where cultural extravaganza take place. There is live music and shows round the year as Barcelonans are happy, carefree people who love dancing and music. Like the other Spanish towns, Barcelona also has its own fiestas, bullfights and other attractions which lure people to it.

This is a bilingual city where Spanish and Catalona are both official languages spoken by the people, most of whom are conversant in both the languages. Sports are a favorite pastime. The 1992 Summer Olympics was held here and so also the X FINA World Championships and several other national and international sports. Barcelona houses the seat of the Catalan Government which is known as the Generalitat de Catalunya which has the executive branch and the parliament.

Bull fighting is an integral and inseparable part of Spain. It is one of the most attractive events even though it is gory for those with weak hearts. It is a traditional Spanish fiesta. It is so much a part of Spain that when constant pressures on stopping it were put, the King of Spain allegedly said that the day the EU bans bullfighting will be the day Spain leaves the EU. It is so much a part of Spain’s culture, art and history.

Bullfighting is a great tourist attraction and a money-spinner. It is big business not only for the sport, but also for the betting and other allied things that go with such events. The bulls used on the occasion are specially bred and when they are around three years old, they are sent to the ring to fight. The matadors who fight with the bulls are special people who have been trained for the purpose. They generally come from families which have bullfighting in their veins and begin training when they are very young. It is almost a family business and the matadors are very serious about it. They are paid a high salary and get almost the same pay as a top soccer player or a rock idol. They dress in special dresses and suits and have to be very quick and flexible to fight with the bulls.

Bullfighting was originally started by the ancient Romans but the Moors developed it and gave it its present touch. The Moors came from North Africa and perfected the art of bullfighting in 711 AD. They would fight the bulls mounted on horses and held thee bullfights on special festive occasions. Now bullfights are held on every Sunday from March till June in almost every city of Spain though the biggest and the best are held in the country’s capital of Madrid where 25,000 people can witness the bullfights on each occasion.

Generally six bulls are killed by three matadors every time. The bullfight lasts for half an hour or so. Matadors, their assistants the banderillos and the picadors march into the ring to the accompaniment of gay music. The music is lively and foot tapping. The matadors in their heavily embroidered silk jackets, skintight trousers and a montera which is a special hat look grand. Each suit can cost several thousand dollars and a top matador has about six to seven such suits in a season. The bull enters the ring and a loud cheering welcomes them. The matador waves his red cape and makes the bull charge. Contrary to the well-wishers of animals who feel that the bulls are starved to make them savage, it is reassuring to know that they are not. They charge because of their instinct. These bulls are different from the normal bulls. They weigh a lot more but are quite nimble on their feet.

The more closer the matador goes to the bull’s angry horns, louder is the cheer from the audience. The response depends on his skill, his dexterity and nimbleness. The more dangerous the move more is the excitement of the audience. There is music and drums keeping pace with the bullfight. After a certain amount of teasing, the matador gets ready for the kill. It has to be precise. He plunges the sword between the shoulders aiming at the aorta as he takes a flying leap over its head. It has to be perfect; else there is grave danger to the matador from the horns as well as the angry bull. The timing, the strength of the plunge, the preciseness has to be perfect. The matadors spend years training for this.

Bullfighting remains an integral part of Spain and has to be on the must-visit list of all tourists.

We have heard a lot about Spain and wanted to see it all. Bullfights and fiestas, beautiful monuments and lovely roads are all specialties of Spain. Places like the Alhambra which is a must on every tourist’s itinerary and the beautiful dances and songs by Spanish ladies and gentlemen are all not to be missed. We can take a Schengen visa, which is common to several European countries, and go to Spain by road from any European country. You can also fly to Madrid or Barcelona and then reach Spain by road.

Spain is known for their bullfights, which may be a bit gory but are very exciting. Though several cities of Spain have bullfighting rings, the one at Madrid is the most popular. There are bullfights quite frequently and it is an event not to be missed. It is very colorful and though it is over within a short while, people are crazy about it. Bullfights are generally held during fiestas, on Sundays and special days. Spring and summer that are from March to October are ideal for visiting Spain and there are many bullfights during this period.

Spain is known for its cathedrals and churches too. Spain has a long history. Italians, Moors, Muslims and Christians have all come here, conquered Spain and left their mark. Spain is thus a melting pot of many cultures, which is what makes it very fascinating.
Spain is a Mediterranean country and the Mediterranean Sea surrounds it on two sides while one side the Atlantic Ocean laps its coastline. Portugal and France are her neighbors. The famous traveler, Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, was given permission by the Spanish King and Queen to do so. This led to Spain making several colonies and ruling almost half of the world.

Spain now is a part of the European Union and shares the Euro rail and the common currency the Euro with other European countries belonging to the EU. Most of the Spaniards are Christians but they have retained some Muslim and Moorish traditions and culture.

Tourism is the biggest industry today and thousands of people visit Spain every year. Spain hosted the Olympic Games in 1992 at Barcelona. Seville organized the Expo 92. Both the events were well organized and very well attended. Madrid is its Capital while Barcelona, Seville, and Granada are the other important cities. Spain is a Constitutional Monarchy and the King’s palace is at Madrid.

The Spanish people love singing and dancing. Every city and town has its own special fiesta. And there is some festival or the other during the entire year when there are parades, festivity, and singing, dancing, feasting, eating and drinking. Some of the festivals take place during the day and night and people really enjoy them and invite even total strangers for it. They are a very friendly people.

However there is one warning for tourists going to Spain. The have to be very careful about their personal belongings and not leave them unattended as, unfortunately, mugging and robbing is on the rise and many careless tourists have been the targets of such acts.

Granada is to the south of Spain and is about six hours drive from Madrid. The roads are smooth and well maintained. Olive trees are grown in perfect symmetry along the roads and it is a pleasure to travel by them.

The city of Granada is the capital of Granada province and it is a lovely place. The province is an autonomous region of Andalausia. It is at a height of 738 meters above sea level and at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Granada is situated at the confluence of three rivers-Beiro, Darro and Genil. Granada means ‘Great Castle’. Like all other cities of Spain, Granada is a cauldron of many cultures. Perhaps the Jews first occupied it, maybe even before the Romans. There have been the Moors, Muslims and Arabs who settled and ruled over the place. The Arabs gave Granada its name in the 8th century. It came into Christian hands in 1492. Granada was called Ilbyr and Illibris by the Romans.

Granada is a great tourist attraction and thousands of tourists come here to see the beautiful architecture and monuments. The greatest attraction is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built by the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th century. It took many years to build and it is a mixture of Muslim, Christian and Jewish legacy. About eight thousand people visit it everyday. Alhambra is situated at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada and overlooks the fertile plains of Granada. Each palace and every garden is beautiful and unforgettable. Tourists admire it and take thousands of pictures of the beautiful architecture which is well preserved.

There are plenty of gypsies in Granada and they have preserved their culture. Dancing in colorful sweeping robes and merry making is part of a Granadian Spaniard’s life. Gypsies probably came some six thousand years ago and settled here. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella unified Spain which included Granada. The Treaty of Surrender signed at that time allowed Muslims to continue with their faith and beliefs without any interference. However it was in 1501 that this Treaty was revoked making it compulsory for Granada’s Muslims to either convert to Christianity of leave the place. The majority complied, converted to Christianity and was called Mosircos, Catholics of Moorish descent. Some immigrated to other countries, mainly North Africa. It was then that the Mosques were transformed into churches and cathedrals. Even the Jews were not spared and given the same ultimatum.

As Granada consists of mountains and beaches, people can have the best of both the worlds. Those who like mountains and love hiking can come here and so also those who wish to sunbathe on the beaches. Granada is a lovely place but is not free from muggers and purse snatchers. Many tourists have fallen prey. However the police are efficient and immediately take measures to see that the passports or the credit cards of the victims are not misused.

Madrid houses the Royalty. The Royal Palace with the King and Queen in residence is a major attraction for tourists. The palace is marble white in color and has lovely gardens which are open for the public. People can wander in the palace gardens and also see some of the rooms in the palace. There is a large lake in the park where boating is done. There is a memorial for the 191 people killed during the March 11, 2004 attacks. The palace is lit in the evenings and is a beautiful sight for the tourists.

Madrid is famous for their bullfights which take place regularly here. Huge bulls and their beautifully dressed matadors fight dangerously for the benefit of the audience who applaud skillful and dangerous moves. The largest bullring in Spain, the Plaza de Toros in Las Ventas is in Madrid. It has a large seating capacity of about 25,000 people and bullfights are normally held on Sundays from March to June and on feasts and special days. Though the sport is gory and not fit for people with weak stomachs, it is an attraction and the sport which has made Spain famous. Records of famous bullfights are all kept and maintained well.

Madrid has beautiful edifices, monuments, churches and mosques which visitors love to see. Madrid also has its share of fiestas, processions and merry making. The climate is good and the people are friendly. Madrid is a major financial center and has many head offices of big Spanish companies. It is the Headquarters of the Telefonica, Repsol-YPF and Endsea, three of the world’s largest companies.

Madrid has a lot of history and culture. The buildings and edifices of Madrid speak of the culture and history of Spain. The Royal Theatre, Opera House, the Buen Retiro Park, the 19th century National Library, museums and many other places are items on visitors’ lists which they can see. The station at Madrid is a poem in beauty. It is large and beautifully constructed. Trains from all over the country and other European countries bring tourists and commuters here. It has an indoor garden which is 4000 sq feet, where more than five hundred species of plants are grown. There is a pond with turtles and other species as well. Plant lovers visit the station, not for boarding trains or going somewhere but to see the beautiful and rare plants. It is unique.

Madrid is 607 square kms in size and has about 3.2 million people. Spaniards love their fiestas, food and drink and are generally merry. Tourist guides speak Spanish, English, French and Italian languages and take visitors on smooth and well conducted tours. Tourism is a big industry in Spain

These tents belong to certain groups like the gentry, or business houses and the like. Even companies have their own tents in the area.

The Seville fair is one of the most awaited of Spanish festivals. The entire area is gaily decorated and has a festive look during the six days that the fair is held. The first fair was held in 1847 when two councilors organized a livestock fair. Queen Isabel II agreed to the proposal and inaugurated it on April 18, 1847 at Prado de San Sebastian which was on the outskirts of the city. The April Fair had nineteen casetas (tents) at that time which has now swelled to thousands. The fair gained momentum and reached a peak in the 1920s when people from all over Spain and even outside came especially for it. Seeing its popularity, the organizers thought of ways and means of making it more interesting and enjoyable.

Today it is a cultural extravaganza which is a must- visit item on every tourist’s agenda.
It begins two weeks after Semana Santa or Easter Holy week. It is officially declared open on a Tuesday midnight and continues for six days till Sunday midnight when it ends with a big fireworks show. Thousands and thousands of lamps are lit to mark the opening ceremony, making it a well-lit occasion.

The gentry of Seville begin coming in a procession at mid-afternoon in gaily decorated carriages and make their way to the bullring where a spectacular bullfight is organized and takes place before the cheering crowd. The entire route is decorated with colorful paper lamps and the streets come to life with horses, horse riders, carriages and wagons carrying men and women dressed in their Sunday best. The women wear colorful flamenco dresses for the occasion.

Families take their children for various sports, rides and games, eating tasty food and drinks that is organized at the fair. Everyone is in a festive mood and have a relaxed week. After the bullfight, the people begin singing and dancing, eating and drinking and making merry. This goes on till midnight on the streets, after which they retire to their chosen tents to continue with the festivities. In the wee hours of the morning the revelers have a frothy chocolate drink and rest for some time till the next day’s festivities begin around noon. This goes on every day till the following Sunday. Even total strangers are invited to the merry making as the Spanish people are friendly and love to enjoy.

La Feria de Sevilla, as it is called, has reached its peak with more and more ideas and merriment being introduced every year. Organized programs and events mark the occasion and tourists who visit La Feria can be assured of having a good time.

It is a very beautiful city and is situated on the river Guadalquivir. Seville is about a thousand years old and has a rich history. The Vandals and the Visogoths conquered this fourth largest city of Spain during the fifth and sixth centuries. The Moors who conquered it later also developed it. They built several beautiful edifices and made it an important place.

Seville was called Hispalis earlier when the Romans were in charge. King Fernando took over Seville from the Muslims in 1248 but it still retains its Moorish character. After Christopher Columbus discovered America, a golden age of development took place at Seville with the wealth which grew as trade with the New World and Spain prospered. Rapid industrialization took place in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Cathedrals and Churches, mosques and buildings have made Seville interesting and a tourist attraction. The Alcazar was developed from an old Moorish palace. Its construction took over five hundred years to complete. It started in 1181 and is a lovely blend of Christian, Moorish and Andalusian traditions. The gardens are beautiful and well laid out. Tourists love to walk in the gardens and enjoy its beauty.

Seville has a big University where many students from all over the world study, and a lovely Town Hall which was built in the 16th century. The climate of Seville is Mediterranean with warm summers and mild winters. It is situated at an elevation of seven meters above sea level and hence has a salubrious climate. People can visit Seville any time of the year but the best period is from March to October.

Seville hosts a very popular Seville Fiesta which is full of fun and frolic. The fiesta begins on a Tuesday afternoon a couple of weeks after Easter and continues till the following Sunday. It again begins on the next Tuesday till Sunday. Thousands of people flock to Seville to participate in the Fiesta. The whole town is decorated and given a gay look. It begins with a drive by the festive people to the Town Hall where hundreds of lamps are lit to signify the beginning of the festival. There are parades and eating, drinking and merry making. The people then reach the bull-fighting ring where bullfights are held. They then return and continue with the festivities.

Special colorful tents are pitched on a special place and the revelers reach there to spend the evening in merriment. This goes on till the next morning and then the people have some chocolate drinks and rest till mid afternoon when the feasting begins all over again. Women wear their traditional dresses and dance the flamenco, which are very popular.

Seville hosted the 1982 WORLD Cup semi final in 1982, the 27th Athletics World Championship in 1999 and the Tennis Davis Cup in 2004. Seville houses the largest DNA Bank and stores over 20,000 DNA samples.

Spain is a place to visit for the round-the-year fiestas in almost every region of the country. Each place has its own fiestas, which are generally very colorful, lovely with plenty of singing, dancing, merriment, eating and drinking, and parades and competitions. Visitors and tourists are never disappointed when they see one of the many fiestas of Spain. They are so attractive and so much fun.

Many of these fiestas are pagan in their roots and are pre catholic. Most do not have any special known origin and they have grown to such stature because of the public participation and the attendance of tourists for these fiestas. Bullfighting and parades are present for every fiesta in any part of Spain. Bullfighting is the national sport which is a must see for every tourist. Though it is gory, music, color and pageantry makes it very attractive. There are bullfights almost everywhere in Spain though the biggest and the best-attended ones are in Madrid where there is a huge bullring with a capacity of holding 25,000 visitors.

The biggest festival is the Semana Santa which is an Easter festival. There are colorful Holy Week processions with huge floats depicting the lives of Jesus Christ, Mother Mary and Christmas. Hooded people carry the images of Jesus and Mary on their shoulders escorted by hundreds of penitents. The Spanish carnival is a well attended fiesta of Spain. A colorful occasion, the carnival is celebrated all over Spain. Each city and each area have their own special attractions of the Carnival. There can be contests and processions. Singing and dancing, jugglery feats and the like are held to attract the crowd and hold their attention.

La Feria de Sevilla is a very famous Andalausian fiesta. Processions of horses and horse riders, carriages and wagons carrying richly dressed men and women make their way to the bullfighting ring. This week long fair begins two weeks after Easter. The inauguration is on Tuesday midnight when thousands of lamps are lit. There is singing and dancing, eating and drinking. Gaily decorated roads and streets lead to gaily decorated tents pitched on the banks of the river where the revelers continue their merry making till the early hours of the morning after which they rest for a few hours till the next day’s fair begins.

Fallas de Valencia has papier mache tableaux which are made well in advance. They cost the earth and go up in flames on March 19 every year, which is the feast day of Saint Joseph. People wearing period clothes and costumes recreate mock battles. Many coastal towns of Spain have this festival where there are fireworks, fun and frolic. Millions of people gather at Whitesuntide in May or June in southern Spain. It is a religious pilgrimage where people from different parts of Andalausia come to participate.

Bunyol, a town in Valencia hosts the Tomatina festival where tomatoes are hurled at each other. Tomato battles are held with tomatoes as the artillery. It is a messy affair which lasts for about an hour and the council water cannons them to clean up the mess.
Spain has many other fiestas throughout the year.
